An Onlooker in France 19171919 eBook William Orpen Reviews
A short and enjoyable read. A compelling and authoritative account of conditions behind the fighting line during the latter part of WW1. Seen through the eyes of an artist. And a non-professional soldier. Good glimpses of social history also.
This book is essential to gaining an insight into Orpen's experiences of World War I and how this impacted upon the course of his artistic career. Written in Orpen's own words, this official war artist comes across as polite and gentlemanly, as indeed were his representations of the battlefield (if one compares them with the visceral quality of German artists' work). But it is very interesting to use this book in conjunction with knowledge of the restrictions imposed upon the artist by the British government, his war letters, and the fact that official war artists were expected to clean up the content of their pictures in order to keep morale up at home. Orpen's feeling for his comrades comes across very strongly and it is evident that had he had his way, his pictures would have exposed the slaughter of the war far more directly.
