"First Call For The Burley Express" follows the adolescent adventures of eight guys from Western Springs, Illinois, an affluent suburb of Chicago, who spent their teenage years taxing the patience of local authorities and exploring all there was to do in downtown Chicago and beyond. Their adventures, and their often-hilarious shared times, helped form enduring friendships that lasted over fifty years. The wisdom they acquired, and the life lessons they learned along the way, became their foundation of experience as they somehow made their way to become responsible adults. As the friends coped with insecurities of high school social life, they found a shared outlet in the big city next store, taking chances and somehow surviving, in an era of semi-lawlessness and mischief that has since largely disappeared---cherry-bombing the town police station on Halloween, sneaking into the box seats in the friendly confines of Wrigley Field, hopping a southbound freight train in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois heading to the Big Easy, careening raucously in a 1953 Ford station wagon "transportation cooperative" to the Follies Burlesque Theatre on South State Street, hitchhiking on the old US 66 highway, walking boldly into the otherwise-segregated Regal Theatre on Chicago's south side to hear The Crystals sing "He's Sure The Boy I Love". These were the late 50s and early 60s, idyllic times to be growing up close to and inside of one of the world's great cities. This memoir chronicles the laughter and highlights, the failures and frustrations, of young men in a time and place that can never and will never be duplicated.

I enjoyed reading the intriguing exploits of this group of close friends. It brought back found memories of my own experiences during my last two years of high school at LTHS in La Grange, IL. Our group was called the "West Side"and consisted of close friends from La Grange Park and Brookfield, IL. Typically we would meet at our school lockers each morning and decide if we would take off on some adventure or endure the boredom of another uneventful school day. What was really impressive about this novel was the closeness of this tight group of friends and how they managed to stay in touch with each other (other than class Reunions) and met annually at places like the gambling casinos in Las Vegas. This book is a must read for anyone growing up in the late 50's or early 60's. Kudos to the author who deftly chronicled the unique personalities and adventures of his group of loyal friends. This book should be an inspiration to all of us to make an effort to stay in touch with close friends.

Very enjoyable autobiography of growing up in Chicago western suburbs in the 50's/60's,filled with many anecdotes of those times .This certainly details a far more innocent time that is gone.
Lots of good advice as well as good stories. Takes you back
Fantastic recall of the mid to late 50's in LaGrange and Western Springs IL. I can empathize. I went to the same high school at the same time, and knew all the people in the book, including Ron Sheeley. Nice job Ron.
My niece Shauna recommended this book to me, and her taste in reading has found me this gem! I knew after the first chapter that I would love this book, the parallels between Chicago growing up were very similar to my own life in Cincinnati. The friendships, and losses, from your formation to adulthood are really brought out in this book. Great read!!
Having been one year ahead of these guys and an LTHS graduate, the book is very accurate. I recognize many of the people and yes have attended the Burley Q on State St with my buddies who I still see from time to time. I only wish the book was edited better for smoother reading but perhaps that's part of the charm and was intended.
If you enjoy reading about the exploits of enterprising high school lads who thumbed their noses at suburbia you'll wonder why you missed all the fun. What might your own high school experience been like had you dared to dance to the suburban drummers as they did.

Reading this book gives you the opportunity to learn about what you missed. But don't despair that you should have been along for the ride unless you understand that these guys went through a lot of tough times along their journey. But they don't whine about their challenges and that makes the book an honest documentary and great fun.
A highly interesting story of friendships formed early as teenagers in the late 1950s and maintained over the years. I won’t be giving away too much to say that the writing of the book was inspired by the death of one of the eight friends. You can read about their adventures and how life was back then in suburban Chicago, and how they re-grouped and celebrated later in life. The book is interspersed with bits of popular music lyrics and tips and living life, such as the best beach in the world and the airport concourse for watching the best-looking women coming into the US (hint it’s in Miami). Overall an enjoyable read.
