First published in three separate volumes from 1855 to 1863, Bulfinch's Mythology quickly became the standard source of classic tales from ancient Greece and Rome, the Norse tradition, and beyond. This edition contains the full text of The Age of Fable, or Stories of Gods and Heroes, the first volume of Bulfinch's seminal work. From stories of the Greek gods of Mt. Olympus to retellings of the Iliad and the Odyssey, from descriptions of mythological monsters to tales of Hindu and Egyptian deities, Bulfinch's versions of these classic stories bring their characters to life.

Throughout the text, Bulfinch includes examples of literary interpretations of and allusions to the various stories and points out proverbial expressions that have their origins in the mythology he relates, making this a vital reference for students of literature as well as a delightfully vibrant collection of the stories that form our cultural heritage.

Bulfinch’s Mythology The Age of Fable or Stories of Gods and Heroes (Audible Audio Edition) Thomas Bulfinch Jonathan Cowley Tantor Audio Books

There is an argument that at $1 you can't go wrong. Personally, I think this volume is so irritating that I'd rather put the money to better use. First, one reviewer wrongly claimed that there was no Table of Contents. There is, but it doesn't appear in the Kindle's listing of TOC - you have to go to the beginning and scroll for it - very sloppy! Then the TOC itself is a real dog's breakfast. A work this size demands that the TOC is properly hierarchical to be effective. Here you get pages of links all carefully formatted to be in the middle of the page!

I haven't read the orginal Bulfinch, so I am unfamiliar with the formatting. But, compared with other electronic versions, I notice that the text here has fewer sub-headings. This can make the text very confusing to read - since often it is little more than a potted family history of Gods, etc.

Another irritation is the introduction of new material. This should only be done if the intent is to make the work a scholarly reference. In which case, it must be done comprehensively and will full references and cross-references. This is clearly not the case, the additions are very ad hoc. My personal view is that it would have been better to present the work as Bulfinch intended it to be - as an entertaining but informative read for a general readership - coherent and comprehensive to that purpose. It is most definitely not an encyclopedia that needs updating!

Finally, the much-vaunted new index. This is little better than the original Glossary. There is, indeed, much scope for adding to the original book in terms of the facilities offered by electronic publication. But, this must be done well. Unfortunately, in this case it has been done badly and this is reflected in the price. Save your money!

Bulfinch’s Mythology The Age of Fable or Stories of Gods and Heroes (Audible Audio Edition) Thomas Bulfinch Jonathan Cowley Tantor Audio Books Reviews

First of all this book does have a easy to use navigation system. It works great for me. Not sure why the last reviewer left such a remark, but I would recommend this 'Specifically Formatted for KINDLE' edition. Some of my faviorte things to read about are King Arthur, Hercules, and Egyptian mythology. This has enough to satisfy the mind, and a good quick reference book!
Even at a mere 100 pennies this book is a rip-off. One simple and avoidable reason no table of contents! If you don't understand why a table of contents is so important for a book of mythology--the book, really--then please feel free to read it from beginning to end.
Mythology has always been an interest to me. It seems this book has plenty to think on. I'm happy to have such a comprehensive list of mythical creatures to read and reference.
enjoy mythology and having it on the kindle lets me take it any where I go. I enjoy norse mythology
Bulfinch is one of a very small number of books that I would let a child read. The fables were written for a Victorian audience and is denuded of most of the blood and gore or the original fables. For adults it is a quick read and allows one to think there was once a simpler time.
