A young girl's world is falling apart. Her mother is deathly ill. Her over-bearing father lives in fear and has narrowed her world to the little farm they work in the Pale of Russia. Now rumors have come that the Czar has commanded the Cossacks to attack her village. Only her frail mother's faith in an ancient legend, the Lamed-Vav, stands between Raizel and the total loss of all she loves.
New people have started to mysteriously appear in the sedentary village. Chaim, the new tinker, could he be one of the mysterious Lamed-Vav? Could his simple acts of kindness, and his counter-intuitive wisdom be the village's salvation? And what of the strange new youth who has come to the village? Who is he, and why does he cause Raizel to feel things she has never before experienced?
In the end, Raizel will discover that nothing is ever quite what one expects, and the most miraculous results can come from unexpected sources.
In this first in a series of stories, an old legend is introduced to help us face the challenges of our times. Our modern myth that people are only out for their own narrow interests, and that only strength and wealth prevails, is put to the test by an ancient myth of love and compassion being the true foundations of the world.

Simple story, well and touchingly told, underlying insights, alive and quick enough for children perhaps ages 4+, thoughtful and reflective for adults who are open to the spiritual (easily dismissed by adults who are not), apparently reifying anew an old Jewish tradition formerly unknown to me. I am looking forward to the next two books of the author's trilogy.Gremlin JW

In our busy lives sometimes it is not easy to find the right time to read. I started reading the story and thought that I would read couple pages at a time when I have time. Well, I couldn't stop reading it until I finished the whole story. I absolutely loved it and would recomend it to everybody. You will not be dissappointed.
What a wonderful way to get introduced to the concept of the "Lamed-Vav". Miracles of the human heart and divine compassion permeate this wonderfully told story. Very enjoyable and uplifting story that captivates the imagination as you are transported to the turbulent times that preceeded World War II.
In today's world of uncertainty and ambiguity we long for modern day heros and heroines to make the world a better place. "Simple Chaim" envelops readers in a story so compelling that we begin to understand how we could be the heros and heroines we seek. This first of three Legends of Lamed-Vav tells a captivating tale that stirs our heart and imagination. I could not put it down until I got to the end.
